Vietnamese overseas players in the Vietnam national team must compete with the top star of U23.

Coach Kim Sang Sik decided to call up young goalkeeper Tran Trung Kien, thereby increasing the total number of goalkeepers in the Vietnam national team for this training session to 5.

The Vietnam national team's training session in March 2026 drew attention because Coach Kim Sang Sik decided to call up up to 5 goalkeepers. In this list, young goalkeeper Tran Trung Kien was added, thus becoming the 5th goalkeeper participating in this training session.

According to the plan, the Vietnam national team will have two matches during FIFA Days, including a friendly match against Bangladesh and a match against Malaysia in the Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers. Despite the limited number of matches, the coaching staff still wants to create strong competition in the goalkeeper position, which currently features many notable names.

Besides Trung Kien, the other four goalkeepers called up include Nguyen Filip, Patrik Le Giang, Dang Van Lam, and Nguyen Dinh Trieu. This is a rare occasion when the Vietnam national team simultaneously has three overseas Vietnamese goalkeepers in the training roster. Their presence makes the competition for the goalkeeper position more notable than ever.

Among the goalkeepers mentioned, each has their own strengths. Nguyen Filip and Patrik Le Giang are currently playing in V.League, while Dang Van Lam remains a familiar name to fans after many years with the national team. Additionally, Dinh Trieu also shows stable performance with his club.

Trung Kien is considered a promising young talent. This goalkeeper has previously played for Vietnam youth teams and left a strong impression in domestic tournaments. Being called up to the national team is an important opportunity for him to gain experience training with senior players.

With five goalkeepers in the training roster, the goalkeeper position of the Vietnam national team promises fierce competition. Typically, each match can only register up to three goalkeepers, so performance in training sessions and internal matches will play a crucial role in determining who gets the starting spot.
