Champions League Round of 16: Who can stop the Premier League?

Throughout English football history, numerous legendary clubs have achieved peaks once thought unreachable. However, one landmark has yet to be reached: winning the "quadruple" – the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, and League Cup all in one season.

This season presents a special opportunity for Arsenal and Manchester City. Both teams are currently competing for the Premier League title while also remaining in the other tournaments. Yet history shows that the journey toward the "quadruple" is far more grueling than imagined.

Which teams have come closest to the quadruple?

One of the most notable examples is Manchester United in the 2008-09 season. At that time, Alex Ferguson's squad was at its peak with an exceptionally talented lineup. The attack featured the famous trio of Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, and Carlos Tevez, while the defense had the steel center-back pairing of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.

Manchester United secured the League Cup in February, fueling hopes of conquering all four major trophies. They successfully defended their Premier League title and advanced deep in the two remaining competitions. However, the historic dream shattered at decisive moments.

In the FA Cup, the "Red Devils" were eliminated by Everton in the semifinals after a tense penalty shootout. In the Champions League, they lost to a Barcelona at its peak in the final. Just those two defeats prevented one of Europe's strongest teams at that time from achieving the quadruple.

Two years earlier, Chelsea under Jose Mourinho also embarked on a promising journey. First, Chelsea defeated Arsenal in the League Cup final. Chelsea then progressed deep in the FA Cup and ultimately won it after beating Manchester United. However, they couldn't maintain perfection in the two remaining arenas. In the Champions League, Chelsea stopped in the semifinals against Liverpool. In the Premier League, they also couldn't close the gap with Manchester United and finished the season as runners-up.

More recently, Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool also came very close to the great feat. In the 2021-22 season, Liverpool won the League Cup and later clinched the FA Cup after defeating Chelsea in the final.

The Merseyside team also reached the Champions League final and competed for the Premier League title until the last round. Yet they ended the season just one point behind Manchester City domestically and lost to Real Madrid in the Champions League final.

Both Arsenal and Manchester City still have full opportunities to achieve the historic quadruple

The Impossible Task

Looking back at the cases mentioned, it's evident that teams nearing the quadruple possessed excellent squads and top-tier managers. However, the harshness of the schedule and pressure across multiple fronts make this mission extremely difficult.

When a team advances deep in all competitions, they must play continuously with a dense frequency, often twice per week. This forces managers to rotate the squad to maintain player fitness. But changing personnel also affects stability, especially in decisive matches.

Pep Guardiola understands this better than anyone. Under his leadership, Manchester City has repeatedly approached the quadruple. In the 2018-19 season, City achieved the domestic "treble" of Premier League, FA Cup, and League Cup, but were eliminated in the Champions League quarter-finals.

By the 2022-23 season, Guardiola's team again created history with a treble of Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League. However, they were knocked out of the League Cup early by Southampton, preventing the dream of securing all four trophies from becoming reality.

Guardiola himself has admitted that winning the quadruple is nearly unimaginable. According to him, achieving this requires not only a superior squad quality but also maintaining consistent form throughout the entire season, along with luck in critical moments.

Therefore, even though Arsenal and Manchester City have the chance to write history this season, the path ahead remains immensely arduous. Just one unfavorable match, a personal mistake, or even a penalty shootout can collapse all ambitions. History has repeatedly proven this.

Thus, the quadruple remains the "Everest" of English football, a goal many great teams have attempted to conquer but none have truly reached.
