Arsenal sets unprecedented record for the Premier League

Manager Mikel Arteta draws attention by giving starting spots to two 16-year-old players, helping Arsenal achieve a rare FA Cup record in the match against Mansfield.

Arsenal has created a memorable milestone when Manager Mikel Arteta gave 16-year-old talent Max Dowman a starting opportunity in the FA Cup fifth-round match against Mansfield Town. The Hale End academy graduate became the youngest player ever to start for the Gunners in this competition.

Not only Dowman, Arteta also surprised by naming 16-year-old defender Marli Salmon in the starting lineup. The appearance of these two teenage players helped Arsenal set a record by becoming the first Premier League team to use two players aged 16 or younger as starters in a match across all competitions.

Arteta's bold decision continues to show his strong belief in the young players developed from the academy. Both Dowman and Salmon have progressed rapidly after impressing during Arsenal's Asian tour in the summer of 2025.

Dowman debuted for Arsenal's first team in August 2025 in a 5-0 win over Leeds United in the Premier League. Meanwhile, Salmon made his debut in December of the same year when Arsenal defeated Club Brugge 3-0 in the Champions League.

Previously, Arteta has often praised the club's youth development system. The Spanish coach emphasized that players from the Hale End academy not only possess professional quality but also demonstrate remarkable maturity despite lacking extensive professional playing experience.

According to Arteta, the ability of young players to quickly integrate with the first team is proof of the club's structured training process. He also believes the positive environment at Arsenal helps young talents confidently perform at the highest level.

At present, Arsenal leads the Premier League standings, holding a seven-point advantage over Manchester City despite the opponent having one match yet to be played. After the FA Cup match, the Gunners will shift focus to the Champions League with a clash against Bayer Leverkusen in the round of 16.
